Zioptan Uses

Zioptan is a medication prescribed to help control the pressure in the eye. In particular, this drug is approved to lower eye pressure in people with open angle glaucoma or those who have high eye pressure. Zioptan is used in adults only, and works by draining excess fluid from the eye. This can help prevent optic nerve damage and vision loss.

What Is Zioptan Used For?

Zioptan® (tafluprost ophthalmic solution) is a prescription eye drop approved to help lower eye pressure in people with the following conditions:

Zioptan is the first preservative-free eye drop in its class, which can be beneficial to people who are sensitive to preservatives. All other similar medications contain preservatives.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that share certain features, such as:

  • High pressure within the eye
  • Optic nerve damage
  • Loss of peripheral (side) vision.

In some cases, blindness may occur. Open angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma (see Types of Glaucoma).

Although there is no cure for open angle glaucoma, symptoms can usually be controlled. The most common treatments include:

Not everyone with high eye pressure has glaucoma. For instance, people may have high eye pressure without any damage to the optic nerve, especially early in the course of the disease. However, high eye pressure should be treated, as it can lead to glaucoma. Effectively treating high eye pressure can help prevent glaucoma.
