Generic Rescula

There are no generic forms of Rescula (unoprostone ophthalmic solution) available at this time. A generic version of this drug is not expected to become available until after the patents for the drug expire, which is not until 2018 and 2021. Although unoprostone ophthalmic solution is often called the "generic name" for Rescula, it is not a generic version of it.

Can I Buy Generic Rescula?

Rescula® (unoprostone ophthalmic solution) is a prescription eye drop. It is used in the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension (high eye pressure).
Rescula is made by Sucampo Pharma Americas, LLC. It is currently protected by several patents that prevent generic Rescula from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version be Available?

The first patent for Rescula expired in July 2012. However, Rescula is protected by other patents that do not expire until 2018 and 2021. Realistically, there will probably not be a generic Rescula medication until these other patents expire.
However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for new Rescula uses. Once Rescula goes off-patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Rescula medication.

Is Unoprostone a Generic Rescula?

No -- unoprostone is the active ingredient in Rescula, not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
