Qoliana and Breastfeeding

No studies have been done on using Qoliana in women who were breastfeeding, so it's unknown if the drug passes through breast milk. Because it is an eye drop and only a small amount of the medicine might reach the bloodstream, it is unlikely that Qoliana would be passed through breast milk in amounts high enough to cause problems.

Can Breastfeeding Women Use Qoliana?

At this time, it is unknown if Qoliana® (brimonidine tartrate) is safe for use in breastfeeding women. The manufacturer recommends that women avoid using this medication while nursing. If you are breastfeeding or plan to start, you should talk with your healthcare provider before using Qoliana.

More Information on Qoliana and Breastfeeding

No studies have been done to see if Qoliana passes through breast milk in humans, although it has been shown to pass through breast milk in animal studies. It is important to understand that even though Qoliana is an eye drop, it is possible that some of the medication may reach the bloodstream and could possibly pass through breast milk.

With normal use of Qoliana, it is unlikely that a large amount of the drug would reach the breast milk. However, the possibility of problems cannot be entirely eliminated, as this medication has never been studied in breastfeeding women.

If your healthcare provider recommends using Qoliana while breastfeeding, make sure to watch for any side effects in your child. If you use these eye drops while nursing, it is probably a good idea to apply pressure with a finger to the inside corner of the eye(s) for a minute or more after each dose to help limit absorption of the drug into the bloodstream. This may decrease the chance of the medication reaching the breast milk.
