Glaucoma Home > Generic Zioptan

Because the patent for Zioptan (tafluprost) has not yet expired, no generic versions of this drug are available at this time. This patent prevents a company from manufacturing a generic Zioptan product. However, after this patent expires in December 2017, and no litigation or new patents are pending, a company may be allowed to manufacture a generic version.

Can I Buy Generic Zioptan?

Zioptan® (tafluprost ophthalmic solution) is a prescription medicine approved for the treatment of high eye pressure and open angle glaucoma. It comes in the form of an eye drop and belongs to a group of medications known as prostaglandins.

Zioptan is manufactured by Laboratoire Unither for Merck & Co., Inc. It is currently protected from generic competition by a patent that prevents any generic Zioptan from being manufactured in the United States.

However, if you search the Internet for "generic Zioptan," you may find a number of companies selling it. The fact is that these medicines may be fake, substandard, and potentially dangerous. There may be generic Zioptan available from another country, but there is no way of knowing if you are getting the genuine product. You should not buy any generic Zioptan until there is an approved version available.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The first patent for Zioptan is set to expire in December 2017. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or patents for new Zioptan uses. Once the patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Zioptan drug.
