Glaucoma Home > Generic Alphagan

At this time, there are generic versions of Alphagan (brimonidine) available. As a matter of fact, original Alphagan is only available in generic form. For Alphagan P, there are generic products available for the higher strength (sold as brimonidine tartrate 0.15% ophthalmic solution), but the lower strength is still only available in brand-name form. It is not known when a generic for Alphagan 0.1% will be available.

Can I Buy Generic Alphagan?

Alphagan® (brimonidine tartrate) is a prescription eye drop approved for the treatment of glaucoma and high eye pressure. It belongs to a group of medications known as alpha adrenergic agonists. This eye medicine works to lower eye pressure by decreasing fluid production in the eye and by increasing the drainage of fluid out of the eye.
There are two different formulations of Alphagan -- original Alphagan and the newer Alphagan P. The main differences between the formulations are the strengths and the preservatives used.
Brand-name Alphagan P is manufactured by Allergan, Inc. Brand-name original Alphagan was also made by Allergan, Inc., but is no longer available (although generic forms are still available). Original Alphagan and one strength of Alphagan P are available in generic form.
