Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterized by abnormally high eye pressure, optic nerve damage, loss of side vision, and possibly blindness. Open angle glaucoma is the most common of these. Certain people are at a higher risk for developing these eye problems, including African Americans over the age of 40, people who have diabetes, and people with a family history of the condition. Studies have shown that early detection and treatment -- before it causes major vision loss -- is the best way to control glaucoma.
