Studies have shown that early detection and treatment -- before major vision loss occurs -- is the best way to control glaucoma. Although there is no cure, the condition can be controlled with medications (pills or eye drops), laser surgery, or traditional surgery.
Eye drops and pills are the most common form of early treatment for glaucoma. Some medicines work by causing the eye to make less fluid, while others lower pressure by helping fluid drain from the eye. Laser surgery and traditional glaucoma surgery both help fluid drain out of the eye. However, laser surgery carries fewer risks and does not require a hospital stay.
