Cosopt Active Ingredients

Cosopt® (dorzolamide/timolol) is a prescription eye drop used to relieve high eye pressure related to chronic open-angle glaucoma and intraocular hypertension. There are two active ingredients in Cosopt: a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (dorzolamide) and a beta blocker (timolol). These two medications work together to decrease the amount of fluid the eye produces, which in turn reduces pressure.

Although this medication is generally well tolerated, timolol, one of the active ingredients in Cosopt, does pass through breast milk, even when used as an eye drop. In addition, people who are already taking beta blocker medications may need to use a different eye drop in order to prevent a potentially serious drug interaction.
