Betagan and Breastfeeding

No studies have been done on breastfeeding and Betagan, so it is not known whether this medication passes through breast milk or whether any problems would occur if it did. Because Betagan is an eye drop, it is unlikely that a significant amount of the drug would reach the breast milk. However, if you are using Betagan and nursing, watch out for any problems in your infant.

Is Using Betagan While Breastfeeding Safe?

At this time, it is unknown if Betagan® (levobunolol hydrochloride) is safe to take while breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding a child, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking Betagan. The manufacturer of Betagan recommends that this medication be used cautiously in women who are breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding and Betagan: Safety Issues

It is important to understand that even though Betagan is an eye drop, some of the medication does reach the bloodstream (and could, therefore, possibly pass through breast milk). However, no studies have been done to see if this actually happens. In any case, it is unlikely that a significant amount of the drug would reach the breast milk. However, the possibility of problems cannot be entirely eliminated, as this medication has never been studied in breastfeeding women.

If your healthcare provider recommends taking Betagan while breastfeeding, make sure to watch for any side effects in your child.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should talk with your healthcare provider about breastfeeding while taking Betagan. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision that is right for you.
