Can I Buy Generic Alphagan?
Alphagan® (
brimonidine tartrate) is a prescription eye drop approved for the treatment of
glaucoma and high eye pressure. It belongs to a group of medications known as alpha adrenergic agonists. This eye medicine works to lower eye pressure by decreasing fluid production in the eye and by increasing the drainage of fluid out of the eye.
There are two different formulations of Alphagan -- original Alphagan and the newer
Alphagan P. The main differences between the formulations are the strengths and the preservatives used.
Brand-name Alphagan P is manufactured by Allergan, Inc. Brand-name original Alphagan was also made by Allergan, Inc., but is no longer available (although generic forms are still available). Original Alphagan and one strength of Alphagan P are available in generic form.
Availability of Generic Alphagan
Original Alphagan is available only in generic form (as brimonidine tartrate 0.2% ophthalmic solution). It is made by various companies, including:
- Akorn, Inc.
- Bausch & Lomb Incorporated
- Falcon Pharmaceuticals
- Pacific Pharmaceuticals Limited.
At this time,
generic Alphagan P is available in just one strength -- brimonidine tartrate 0.15% ophthalmic solution. This generic product is made by Falcon Pharmaceuticals. The lower strength of Alphagan P (0.1%) is not yet available in generic form.
